Staging a Home with No “Curve” Appeal for Zombie House Flipping (S2 E7)

Zombie House Flipping main title

At MHM Professional Staging, we love working with the talented crew of Zombie House Flipping to bring their renovations to life. The team of local real-estate-aces-turned-television-stars has a long track record of turning empty “Zombie” houses into some of the most beautiful homes in Orlando. The home in season two episode seven of Zombie House Flipping, however, presented incredibly unique challenges for the team. The house in this episode needed extensive exterior work and a complete reworking of the interior layout. But as the team would soon learn, the biggest challenge for this home was how to fix the dangerous situation lurking just behind the home’s backyard…

About the Zombie House

The house in season two episode seven of Zombie House Flipping was a certified zombie even before the team pulled into the driveway. Although the home is located in the desirable Lake Jewel Hills neighborhood, it was a bank-owned property listed for short sale (for good reason). The home sits directly behind a sharp curve in the road. With limited signage, drivers were constantly taking the turn too quickly and barreling into the concrete wall bordering the backyard. Obviously, this was a huge safety issue for any owner but especially those with young children and pets.

On the exterior, the team needed to replace the aging roof and rectify the outdated faux flagstone siding. Inside, this zombie presented them with a closed-off kitchen, a walk-in closet that was big enough to be an office, and a dark living room with no view of the pristine pool in the backyard. Once the Zombie team cleared all of these obstacles, they called in the experts from MHM Professional Staging to make the home look cohesive and put the finishing touches on their renovation.

Staging the “Curve” Appeal Zombie

In season two episode seven, the Zombie House Flipping crew transformed every inch of the home. They opened up the floorplan and installed new flooring in every room. They purchased new countertops and completely redesigned the kitchen. The staging needed to highlight all of the new features in the best way possible—and that’s exactly what it did!

In the Living Room

In the living room, we loved the new wood-look porcelain tiles. They truly shone in the natural light that poured into the room as a result of knocking down the interior walls. We chose a comfy, dark grey couch and two modern armchairs to make this room look cozy and conversational. On the wall, we hung a custom piece of artwork painted by our very own Megan Morris to brighten the room.

In the Kitchen

The house in this episode was difficult to sell because of the dangerous curve outside. We needed to make sure the home itself was attractive enough to overcome the curve issue, and the kitchen staging does just that. The Zombie team chose a beautiful, white and grey granite to pair with the fresh white cabinets. Our job was to help potential buyers envision themselves cooking and living in this space. We added a touch of greenery and a few lemons and limes to give the fresh white kitchen a few pops of color. We chose linen stools for the island seating to add a bit of texture. The final touch was the cookbook on the counter, which truly gave this kitchen the feeling of home.

On the Patio

Perhaps one of the best selling features of this home was the pool in the backyard. That said, a screened-in patio is always a great feature that buyers look for in a Florida home. To make this room functional yet beautiful we choose a modern, resin wicker sectional. Blue cushions paired well with the color the Zombie team chose for the exterior of the house. A side table with wine glasses showcases how this space could be used for a relaxing evening with loved ones.

In the Master Bedroom

The focus of any master bedroom is always on the bed. Our designers chose to use a platform bed with a plush, tufted headboard. Across from the bed, we tied in the linen elements from the rest of the house with a light fabric armchair.

The natural light from the windows perfectly illuminated the artwork on the walls, allowing the space to feel full without distracting the buyer from the room itself.

In the “Cl-office”

One of the most unique features of this home was the oversized closet located just off the master bedroom. We could have simply left this room alone and allowed the team to sell it as a closet. However, by staging the room as an office we were able to show the versatility of the space. This encourages buyers to imagine the possibilities for themselves.

In the Bathroom

Brown and white accessories complement the countertop in the bathroom. A vase with bright yellow flowers makes the space feel natural and inviting. A perfectly placed landscape photo brings outside energy into the room.

With the staging complete, the Zombie team was able to say that this house was no longer a zombie; it became a beautiful home for a lucky family to enjoy.
