Before you hire a staging company, it is important to understand what it is and how it’s different than interior design. Home staging is decorating a home for the specific purpose of getting it ready for the real estate market. The goal of staging is to sell homes quickly for the most value. On the contrary, interior design is usually tailored to someone’s specific tastes and preferences. Just because someone is a good interior designer, it doesn’t mean they will provide the most valuable results when you are trying to sell your home.

Choose a Qualified Company with Experience

Essentially, a staging company is a realtor’s marketing partner. You want to make sure that your partner knows what they’re doing before you invest in their services. 

First, find out how long they have been staging homes. Have they had experience staging many different types of homes? It helps if they’ve dealt with a wide range of target markets. Do they have experience staging a home that is within your home’s price point? For instance, if a staging company only has experience staging small homes and apartments, but your home is a luxury home, then they may not be the best fit. Ask them how they go about staging a home. They should understand that staging is not a “one size fits all” approach. 

In addition, find out what kind of training they have received. Are they associated with any home staging or professional real estate organizations? If they are a reputable staging company, they should be certified as well as insured.

Browse the Company’s Portfolio

When viewing a staging company’s portfolio, make sure the photos are professional and polished. The photos of their staging should be up-to-date with industry trends. This is especially important because you will be competing with other homes on the market. The staging company’s portfolio should show a range of styles to prove they are capable of working with different target markets. It would be helpful if they are particularly familiar with your city’s market.

Pro Tip: Ask the staging company to see their three most recent staging assignments. This way you can avoid them only showing their best work.

The best way to learn about a company is from its clients directly. See if the staging company has received any testimonials. What do past clients have to say about their experience? Is it mostly positive? Along with testimonials, published reviews can give you an idea of whether or not you want to work with them. Great testimonials and reviews are usually a great sign.

Not all homes and budgets will be appropriate for traditional home staging. When hiring a staging company, you want to make sure that they can service all of your clients, even those with smaller budgets.
