At MHM Professional Staging, we love using color to turn an ordinary house into a buyer’s dream home. Each month, our designers share a color that inspires their designs. This month, our trending color is Mature Grape (SW 6286). Mature Grape is a rich color known to stimulate the mind, awaken the imagination, and spark creativity.
About The Hue
Along with creativity, shades of purple are associated with royalty, power, wisdom, and luxury. Purple is correlated with luxury because historically, it has been the most expensive to produce. Since purple is made of both red and blue, it can either be warm or cool, making it a more versatile color than you would think. The red brings energy to the color, while blue brings stability. Purple is an uplifting color that embodies vitality. According to color psychology, purple can have calming effects over the mind and nerves.
How and When to Use Mature Grape
Use As Pops of Color
Since Mature Grape is such a rich hue, use it for pops of color. We don’t recommend using it to paint a whole room since it has an LRV, or light reflecting value, of 7. This means that the color doesn’t reflect much light. If you use it for a whole room, make sure to provide sufficient lighting. Also, keep in mind that painting a whole room in a darker color can make it appear smaller.
We recommend saving Mature Grape for focal points like furniture and rugs, then grounding it with neutrals. Mature Grape walls also look great as a backdrop for eclectic art. The more art pieces you have on the wall, the trendier it will look. Mature Grape is great for a bathroom if you are going for a modern or meditative vibe.
Although Mature Grape on walls can create a bold look, it can be difficult to paint over. If you plan to sell your home in the near future, consider using the color through other design elements like throw pillows and curtains instead of your walls.
Use With Dark Floors
Mature Grape is best used with dark floors. The contrast of a lighter floor will make the color look out of place. If you must pair the color with lighter floors, create a more cohesive look by adding an exotic rug with shades of red or plum.
Tone down the intensity of a dark purple with neutral colors like Ibis White (SW7000), Natural Choice (SW 7011), or Universal Khaki (SW6150). When you match Mature Grape with earthy tones you’ll achieve a clean and sophisticated look. If you are pairing with white, make sure you use more of an ivory than pure white since it’s easier on the eyes.
To bring out the warmth of Mature Grape, pair it with warm metals like gold, copper, bronze, or brass. For instance, if you paint a wall in your living room, you can contrast it with a bronze bar cart. If you use this color in your bathroom wall, a gold mirror would look great!
Create the Perfect Color Palette For Fall With Mature Grape
Mature Grape is the perfect color to mix into a fall color palette. You can mix in harmonious colors like shades of brown and yellow into your palette. Dark purple and chartreuse are especially great for fall. Add some natural wood to complement your fall color palette if you want to feel more connected to nature in your space.
Here’s an example of an excellent fall color palette: Mature Grape, Wine Red, Forest, and Chestnut. You can mix some lighter colors with this palette for contrast like juicy apple greens and neutrals.
