Dining room with virtual staging

Virtual decorating is one of the easiest, most flexible ways to decorate your home. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world – you can get professional guidance from our team of designers to help you transform your home into the one you’ve always dreamed of having.

With virtual decorating, we can help you with everything from a minor facelift to putting a plan together for an entire renovation. Then, you have the freedom to implement it yourself based on your own schedule and budget.

Once you’ve decided to embark on a virtual decorating project, you can get a head start by getting a few things prepared first. Then, we can hit the ground running and get the most out of our sessions!

Preparing for Your Virtual Decorating Project

Choose the Space

The first step is to choose what room in your home you want to decorate. Even if you plan to decorate your entire home, it’s best to focus on one room at a time so you can give it your full attention and avoid getting overwhelmed.

If you aren’t sure where to start, ask yourself:

  • Which room do I/we spend the most time in?
  • Which room will have the biggest impact on my/our mood and lifestyle?
  • Which room can I comfortably transform within my current budget?

Take Photos

To give us a clear idea of how the space is laid out, what the lighting is like, and other important factors, we’ll need to see photographs of it. Take as many pictures as you can to give us every possible angle.

These photos will also be useful to you so you can get a more objective view of it. When you live in a space, it’s hard to really see the details of it anymore because you’re so used to staring at it. Looking at photos, however, allows you to see it from a more objective perspective. They are also great to look back on when the room is finished to see how big the transformation was!

Get Measurements

Another important step in your preparation is to take measurements of the room. You’ll want to know the dimensions of the room, windows, doors, and any other architectural elements of the room, such as pillars, alcoves, and window seats. You’ll also need to know the ceiling height and depth of things like countertops.

These will all come in handy during many stages of the decorating process, from putting together a floor plan to picking out furniture.

Think About Your Needs

When it comes to the room you’ll be decorating, think about the function of it. How will you be using the space? Will you be entertaining in it? Is it for the entire family or will it be more formal? Does it need to have storage space?

These questions will be useful to every aspect of the decorating process. For example: if you are decorating your family room where your kids will hang out and you’ll entertain guests, then that will affect the layout of the room, the furniture you choose, the durability of the materials, and even the color scheme.

If you know who will be using the room and for what purpose, we’ll be able to dive right into the planning process.

Plan Your Budget

Going into a decorating project without a clear budget is a recipe for disaster. This leads to spending too much on some things and not leaving enough left over for others, or spending so much that you end up putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation.

Take the time to plan your budget before you get started so you know what you are comfortable spending. If you plan to decorate any rooms afterward, you may want to set a budget for your entire home and then decide how much will be devoted to that particular space. Also, be sure to build in a cushion in case anything ends up costing more than anticipated, especially if you are going to do any remodeling work.

Set a Timeline

One of the best parts about virtual decorating is that you have complete freedom over the timeline. If you are going to hire any contractors, you’ll have some restraints there, but other than that, you can choose to implement everything at once or do it little by little depending on your own schedule and budget.

The benefit of deciding on a timeline – whether it is long or short – is being able to determine when you should implement different aspects of the project. If you need to do any construction work, for example, you’ll want to get that out of the way first and build in the time it will take for the contractors to finish the work.
