Need to start packing up your home for a move while it's still on the market? Follow these tips to make your home still look great to buyers while you get ahead on packing. When you are in a hurry to sell your home and move into the next one, the packing process may coincide with the selling process. Packing up your home while it’s still on the market isn’t ideal but sometimes, it’s necessary. The good news is that with a bit of effort and careful planning, you can stage your home in a way that will have it selling fast and for top dollar while also getting ahead on packing.

Follow these tips on staging your home while packing for a move to make the best of the situation.

Tips on Staging While Packing to Move

Declutter as much as you can

Before you list your home for sale, do a thorough decluttering of the entire house. Decluttering not only makes your home look better to buyers but it’s also the first step to packing up your home for sale, so the benefits are twofold.

Go through every room and get rid of anything you no longer want or need. To make it easier, divide the items into piles (keep, toss, sell, donate) so the process of getting rid of the things you don’t want will be simplified. Once everything is cleared out, you can focus on packing up what you do want to keep.

Start with what you don’t need

When it comes to packing, start with the items you don’t need access to while the home is on the market. This includes seasonal items and things you don’t use on a regular basis, such as collectibles, some of your kids’ toys, books, movies, and certain kitchen supplies.

For the purpose of staging, pack up personal items like family photos, framed certifications, taste-specific artwork, and décor that you declutter from shelves and surfaces. The less you have around, the larger and more open your home will appear to buyers.

Store boxes off property (or in an organized way)

The most ideal situation is to store boxes you’ve packed somewhere off property so that the house is entirely clean and staged while it’s on the market, such as in a storage unit or even a friend or family member’s home. If that’s not practical for you, though, make sure the boxes are stored in an organized fashion. Invest in uniform moving boxes and stack them neatly on shelves in the garage, if possible.

Focus on one room at a time

Instead of trying to pack up the whole house at once, focus on one room at a time. This will make the process a lot less overwhelming to you. It will also keep your home looking neat and organized when only one room is being worked on at a time. Before a showing, make sure your packing supplies are put away or at least organized neatly in the space before buyers come to tour the home.
