How to Keep Your Home From Looking Dated

Want to avoid falling into the trap of having dated decor every few years? Follow these decorating tips to keep your home classic but contemporary. Decorating trends are a lot of fun. Styles go in and out and inspire us all to try things outside of our comfort zones, which is a good thing. They make sure that design never gets stale. However, if you always follow trends with your home décor, then you may be falling into the frustrating trap of constantly having to redecorate.

This can become costly and time-consuming. However, it doesn’t mean you should never indulge in trends. It just means you should play it smart in how you incorporate them into your home.

Here are some tips on how to avoid a dated look in your home.

Decorating Tips to Avoid a Dated Look

Go with a neutral base

Colors go in trends and seasons, so they’re one of the fastest ways to date your home. Going with a neutral palette as your base affords you the freedom to change accent colors at your leisure. Anything that is a big investment that you don’t want to worry about swapping out as the trends change, such as kitchen cabinets and flooring, should stay neutral. If you don’t want to paint your walls very often, keep those neutral, too, or maybe do just a few accent walls in trendy colors.

Stick with classic lines

Furniture styles go in and out of style, but there are certain shapes that are timeless. Anything streamlined, for example, will remain classic through the years. That means for larger pieces that are a bigger investment, such as an entertainment center, sofa, or bedroom set, stick with classic lines and styles so you don’t have to worry about replacing them in a few years when the trendy furniture is no longer in.

Incorporate trendy things in small doses

Of course, there is nothing wrong with incorporating trends – as long as you do so in small doses. Small decorative accents or pieces of furniture, such as coffee table décor or an armchair, for example, are good places in which to indulge in a trend you love. If you want to do a trendy wall treatment, transform just an accent wall. That way, when the trend inevitably goes out of style, you don’t have to invest a lot of time and money in switching those elements out.

Know your own personal style

A reason many people fall into decorating with every new trend that comes along is that they aren’t sure what their own personal style is, so they look to what’s popular to determine how they should decorate. Figuring out what it is you love is one of the most important steps in decorating a home you’ll be happy with for years to come. While your style and tastes will evolve over time, certain elements will always remain the same once you determine what they are.

Embrace change

As we mentioned, your style and tastes will always be evolving and trends will come and go. It’s good to keep things fresh and stay inspired. While the bulk of your décor will probably stay the same for a while, it’s good to embrace change even in small ways and be open to making big changes when the time is right. Keep your imagination open!
