There are a lot of home stagers out there but not all of them can deliver on the full marketing potential of home staging. Before you hire someone, here are some key questions to ask them to make sure they are the right choice to invest in.

Questions to Ask Home Stagers

What are your qualifications and experience?

One of the first things to find out is what a home stager’s background is. How long have they been in the home staging business? What is their training? Are they a member of any home staging organizations such as ASP? Are they familiar with your city’s market? What is their track record?

Some people may claim they can do home staging because they have experience decorating homes. Home staging is not the same as decorating, so while someone may have a lot of experience in decorating, it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be able to deliver valuable results when it comes to preparing a home for the real estate market. Home stagers not only know how to make a home look great, but they also know how to make it appealing to a specific market.

Are you insured?

A legitimate, experienced home stager should be fully insured in the rare case any damage or injury should occur during the staging process. This is common practice so if a stager cannot show proof of these things, consider it a red flag.

Do you have a portfolio and client testimonials?

As they say, the proof is in the pudding. Ask to see the stager’s portfolio to see what their work is like firsthand. Is the staging appealing and up-to-date with the industry’s trends? Do they show a range of styles to fit different homes? Have they staged homes in your home’s price range? Are the photos professional and polished?

There should also be plenty of client testimonials and reviews for you to check out before making your decision. A reputable company will have reviews published online. They will give you a good idea of what you can expect when working with that stager.

Do you do home staging or redesign?

Redesign is the process of using what a client already has in a more effective, appealing way. It usually consists of rearranging furniture and decluttering. Home staging is more involved; it includes bringing in outside furniture and décor and sometimes painting the walls, changing out flooring, and other improvements. In some cases, a home only needs a little redesign to be ready for the market or may need a mixture of staging and redesign. Find out what a stager’s process is to make sure they are equipped and skilled to do both.

How do you choose what goes in a home?

The process of choosing the furniture and décor for a home is unique to each listing. There are many factors to consider such as the style of the home, the size of each room, and the market of that particular neighborhood. Staging is not a “one size fits all” approach.

Can you deliver within our timeline?

If you have a specific timeline in which you want to list your home, make sure the stager can deliver within that time period. If they have too many other projects going, they may not be able to get the job done before your deadline. Make sure everyone is on the same page.

Are you able to refer us to contractors for other necessary work?

Sometimes, a home may need more than just furnishings. Staging can entail a lot of other work such as painting, flooring, professional cleaning, landscaping, and handyman services. Make sure your home stager has contacts they trust that they can refer for any other necessary services to see your home to its best market-ready condition.
