Wish your home had more unique, interesting architectural details? You don't have to spend a lot of money to get them. Here are some easy ways to give your home more character.Planned communities have been around for decades now and with them have come “cookie cutter” homes. What this refers to are homes with very basic (if any) architectural details. If you want a newer home but also want it to have some character, it can be frustrating to find what you’re looking for.

Thankfully, a home doesn’t have to have character when it’s being built. It’s easy to add it after the fact with some easy decorating tricks. Follow these simple tips to you’re your home more unique and give it some charm.

Decorating Tips to Give Your Home More Character

Add molding

Molding is a beautiful addition that instantly elevates the style of any space, whether it’s baseboards, crown molding, or trim creating the look of wall panels. Any of these are an easy do-it-yourself project that can be done on a small budget, but the results will look upscale and add a lot of character to your home.

Keep in mind your ceiling height. If you have high ceilings, thick crown molding will look great and you could even add some extra molding to the top of your baseboards. However, if your ceilings are very low, stick to a thinner crown molding. It will still polish off the space without dwarfing it.

Create an accent wall

It’s amazing how much impact one small accent wall can have on an entire room. All you need is a can of paint or two and the whole room can be transformed. This is something you can do in one afternoon. Choose a bold color for a dramatic effect or simply go a few shades lighter or darker than the current color to create depth.

Another option is to use wallpaper or a special finish on an accent wall for even more of an impact. What would a floral wallpaper look like? Or reclaimed wood panels? Get creative!

Do something different with the ceiling

The ceiling is usually an afterthought but it’s like another blank canvas in a room. An accent color, wallpaper or wood panels could change the entire look of the space. It’s an unexpected design element that will create an instant “wow” factor.

Switch out the hardware

The hardware on your kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, and interior doors aren’t something most people consciously notice but they do have an effect on the “cookie cutter” aesthetic. Swapping them out to something more unique will instantly change the vibe. Your boring cabinets will suddenly have a lot more charm and character, and your interior doors will be more impressive with prettier doorknobs.

Update the light fixtures

Light fixtures, like hardware, are elements that have a lot to do with a “cookie cutter” look in a home because developers use the same general products in every home. Break away from the norm by updating all the light fixtures in your home to something more unique. Think about how different your entryway or bedroom would look with a chandelier, for example. Big difference!

Install special details

There are many other special details you can install to give your home more character. If the kitchen doesn’t currently have one, add a beautiful backsplash to instantly bring up the style a notch. Remove the boring mirror in the master bathroom and replace it with two framed mirrors. Hang curtains in every room to soften the windows and add some style to them.
