Spring is here, and for millions of Americans across the country, that means one thing: it’s time for spring cleaning! If your home is currently on the marketing or if you are planning to sell in the near future, it’s even more important that your home look its best. The best places to start are with decluttering and simply freshening up each space. While your home may be clean on the surface, this is a great time to dig deeper and focus some attention on the details that we tend to overlook throughout the year. Buyers will especially be attuned to the cleanliness of the homes they tour. To make the best impression possible, it’s important to do a deep and thorough cleaning before listing. Below are several tips to help your home look its best this spring:
- Start by deep-cleaning carpets and rugs. After months (or years) of tracking everyday grime through your home, it’s likely that your carpets and rugs need a thorough cleaning. While they may not seem like a big deal to you, even minor stains can significantly detract from the appeal of your home. Buyers will instantly see dollar signs because they will assume they have to replace the carpets. You may be able to clean your carpets on your own, but it’s best to check with a professional before you begin.
- Clean your windows. It’s easy to overlook your windows, but don’t make this mistake. Sparkling glass and clean windowsills can make an entire room feel bright and pleasant, while dirty windows can have a strong negative effect. Clean your windows with warm water and dish soap, and consider using a rubber squeegee to eliminate streaks as the glass dries. You’ll be amazed by the difference this makes on the entire house.
- Eliminate mold from your bathroom. Mold develops quickly and easily in your bathroom, particularly over the winter. Get rid of it by scrubbing floors and other surfaces with a chlorine bleach cleaner (available at most grocery and drug stores), but remember to wear rubber gloves and keep the room well-ventilated while you clean. It’s also wise to wash mats, rugs, and even shower curtains. Just be sure to check the label before you stick anything in the wash!
- Dust your light bulbs. Your bulbs are easy to overlook but can make a big difference. Unscrew your light bulbs and polish them with a dampened cloth. Leave the bulbs off for a few moments before unscrewing them so you don’t burn your hands.
- Clean all of your vents and ceiling fans. It’s important to switch the filters in your air conditioning vents every few months, but the ones in your ceiling can go unnoticed. Dust them off and polish them with a dampened cloth. The same goes for any ceiling fans ─ dust builds up on them fast, so wipe them off and polish them with wood cleaner if they’re made of wood.
- Wipe down and touch up the baseboards. So many homeowners completely forget about their baseboards, but they take quite a beating in terms of dust, dirt and scuff marks. This normal wear and tear has a big effect on how your house shows. First, clean off the dust and pet hair. Then, scrub them down with water, cleaning solution and a sponge. Once they’re clean, go around with paint in your trim color and touch up any marks that couldn’t be removed with the sponge. It takes a little bit of effort, but you’ll be amazed at how fresh and new your home looks afterwards.
- Clean out your closets. We have a tendency to shove anything and everything into our closets, often in a haphazard way. If your home is on the market, it’s crucial that buyers can take a peek into your closets to see how much space is available for storage. If they’re chockfull of stuff then they will be led to believe the house is severely lacking in sufficient storage space. Get rid of gently used items you no longer need by donating them to local organizations such as Goodwill or ThriftMart. Store the rest in nice-looking bins, baskets or boxes to keep things tidy.
